White Building &
Weed's Hardware

The White building c. 1940's, on Erie Street. It housed, among other businesses,
the Weed Hardware Store.
The building partially visible at right is Manufacturers & Traders Trust
Company.

The same view in 2004. Erie Street between Main and Pearl has been eliminated
and replaced by Cathedral Park. M & T remained
at its location on the corner of Pearl Street until it built new quarters on
Main Street in the mid-1960's.

The name "White Building" also applied to the building on Main Street,
around the corner from Erie. This version is c. 1880.

The same Main Street White Building, in its second incarnation. The Main Street
and Erie Street
structures were connected, as can be seen in the photo below.

The corner of Main & Erie Street (White Building at right), c, 1918. The
Weed & Co. Hardware store, a well-known
Buffalo business, moved to new quarters with store entrances on both Erie and
Main Streets in 1895. In their 1918 centennial
book, "From Ox-Cart to Aeroplane," a history of the Weed Hardware
Company, they described their new store thus:
"...the retail operations were moved to the center of the same block -
the roomy store which gracefully curves and runs
from Main to Erie Street."

The same view in 2004. The Weed & Co. Hardware store remained in business
at least into
the 1950's. Descendents of the Weed family liquidated the business. The buildings
on this block remain, however,
and are occupied by businesses such as Damon & Morey Attorneys.
