Beardslee House, Warsaw NY

West Buffalo Street c. 1910. The Beardslee house is at right.

Nathan S. Beardslee earned his fortune from his Empire Salt Company, one of 13 salt companies operating in Warsaw between
1880 and 1900. He purchased land adjacent to the Warsaw school on West Buffalo Street and constructed an impressive
Shingle Style house and stables for his family in 1895. He was considered a town father, serving as village president and
on the library board. In his will, he left $15,000 specifically to be used to construct public baths and a swimming pool within
the village.

Buildings of the Warsaw Central School District occupy the site of the Beardslee house. In 1952, the newly formed Central
School District purchased the Beardslee property to make way for the construction of their consolidated High School.

The District demolished the Beardslee home but retained the stables for its use.

The stables remaining today show a replacement door and removed eyebrow dormers, but the cut stone base
and fancifully shingled facade give an idea of what was lost when the house was razed.
